Key takeaway: AI search is roughly 30 times more selective than traditional Google search: ChatGPT recommends only about 1.2% of business locations it’s asked about, Perplexity around 7.4%, against Google’s local pack showing up 35.9% of the time. Getting into that narrow slice matters, but not every platform deserves equal effort everywhere. For a business in Bangladesh specifically, Google AI Overviews deserve the most attention, ChatGPT comes second, and Perplexity is a distant third, for reasons that have nothing to do with SEO and everything to do with which of these tools people here can actually access.
Most guides on this topic treat ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews as three equally important targets, and optimize for all three the same way. That advice comes almost entirely from US and Western European data, and it doesn’t translate cleanly to every market. Where a business is located changes which of these platforms are worth the effort, sometimes significantly.
Test Where You Actually Stand First
Before optimizing anything, find out what these tools currently say. Open ChatGPT and Perplexity and ask a version of the question a real customer would ask: “who’s a good [service] in [city].” See if the business shows up, and if it doesn’t, see who does. Perplexity is particularly useful here since its numbered citations reveal exactly which sites it pulled the answer from, a direct look at what it currently considers a trustworthy source for that query.
This baseline matters more than any checklist, since it shows which platform is already close to recommending the business and which one isn’t in the conversation at all.
The Foundation Every Platform Shares
Across every source examined for this piece, one signal keeps showing up as the common denominator: Google Business Profile completeness and accuracy. This lines up with the same verifiability principle covered earlier in this series on trust signals: a complete, specific, checkable profile, correct categories, current photos, an accurate services list, gives AI systems something concrete to extract and cite, the same way it gives a human visitor something to trust.
Name, address, and phone number consistency across every platform the business appears on matters here too, for the same reason it matters for traditional local ranking: an AI system cross-referencing multiple sources for consistency treats mismatched details as a reason for lower confidence, not a minor inconsistency to shrug off.
The Lever Most Businesses Miss: Bing Places
This is worth calling out specifically because it’s easy to overlook. Bing Places, Microsoft’s answer to Google Business Profile, feeds business data directly into both ChatGPT and Perplexity, since both platforms draw on Bing’s search index and local data behind the scenes. A business that has only ever claimed its Google listing and never touched Bing Places is invisible to a data source that two major AI platforms are actively pulling from. Claiming and completing a Bing Places listing costs nothing and takes under an hour.
Where the Three Platforms Actually Diverge
Google AI Overviews lean heavily on traditional SEO signals underneath the surface: strong organic rankings, well-structured content, and clear, extractable answers on the page itself increase the odds of being pulled into the summary. ChatGPT leans toward authoritative, encyclopedic-style sources; Wikipedia alone gets cited in roughly 47.9% of its top responses, which means genuine third-party mentions and citations on established, credible sites carry real weight. Perplexity leans more heavily on real-time web content and community discussion, including Reddit threads, which makes an active, genuine presence in relevant online discussions more useful for this platform specifically than for the other two.
The Bangladesh Reality Check
Here’s where the advice above needs an honest adjustment, because platform adoption isn’t even close to equal here.
Google AI Overviews carry zero adoption friction in this market. They appear inside the same Google Search interface people already use every day, with no new app, account, or habit required. If a search triggers an AI Overview, it shows up automatically for anyone already searching that way.
ChatGPT has real, substantial adoption across the region. A 2026 APAC-wide study found ChatGPT is the leading AI assistant in every major economy examined except China, Bangladesh included, and its free tier keeps the access barrier low.
Perplexity is where the picture changes sharply. Its subscription model requires an international credit card, and it doesn’t accept bKash, Nagad, local debit cards, or Rocket, the payment methods most people in Bangladesh actually use. At roughly $20 a month, that’s a real cost barrier even before the payment-method problem. A free tier exists, but the combination of payment friction and price puts meaningful, habitual use of Perplexity out of reach for a large share of the local audience that would otherwise search for a local service.
The practical result: optimizing heavily for Perplexity specifically is a reasonable move for a business primarily serving international or diaspora clients who already use the platform, but it’s a lower priority for a business whose customers are local, price-sensitive, and paying in taka. The effort is better spent on Google AI Overviews first, since that requires no new adoption at all, and ChatGPT second, since its free tier keeps it genuinely accessible here.
How I’d Approach This for a Real Client
A Dhaka-based business owner asked whether to prioritize AI search optimization equally across all three platforms.
Testing first: asking ChatGPT and Perplexity directly showed the business wasn’t appearing in either, while a manual check of relevant Google searches showed an AI Overview already appearing for some of the target queries, without the business mentioned in it.
Given the reality check above, the plan started with completing the Google Business Profile to the same standard covered elsewhere in this series, claiming and filling out Bing Places for the first time, and tightening the on-page content on the core service pages so the actual answer to common questions sits in clearly extractable text near the top of the page, since that’s what Google AI Overviews pull from most reliably. ChatGPT-specific work came next: seeking a few genuine mentions on established local business directories and community sites rather than chasing Wikipedia-level authority outright. Perplexity-specific effort, given the access barriers above, was deprioritized entirely for this particular business.
My Recommendation
Don’t split effort evenly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews by default. Test where the business currently stands on each platform first. Build the shared foundation, complete Google Business Profile, consistent NAP, and a Bing Places listing, since it feeds two platforms at once for minimal effort. For a business serving a Bangladeshi audience specifically, weight Google AI Overviews highest, since it requires no new adoption at all, ChatGPT second, given its accessible free tier and regional dominance, and treat Perplexity as a lower priority unless the client base genuinely includes the international or diaspora users who can actually pay for it.
| Platform | Adoption barrier in Bangladesh | Priority for a local business |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | None, built into existing search behavior | Highest |
| ChatGPT | Low, free tier widely accessible | Second |
| Perplexity | High, requires international card, no local payment options | Lower, unless serving international clients |
